Born 1971 in New York City/USA
Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY/USA
Known to many through her drawings, Danica Phelps has for ten years documented her private life from an economic standpoint. Whilst in her drawings, Phelps overlaps figures and objects in a virtuoso manner and treats perspective and time as if she could spool them back and forth as she likes with the aid of a tape recorder, in her stripe paintings, she meticulously registers everything she spends money on. For every dollar she spends she paints a red stripe, for every dollar she earns a green one. Now ´unmoored´ from her private data, Danica Phelps has opened over the next 1 to 2 years a „Stripe Factory”, in which pictures in earth-colored tones are painted on demand. These stripe paintings are – and this is what makes them special – concretizations of her own modus operandi.
